Novak Djokovic has reclaimed his place as the top seed in Paris, but the king of clay Rafael Nadal will be the one to watch as he looks to extend his all-time record of 12 title victories in this tournament.

World number 2 Nadal received an accommodating path through the early rounds of the competition and will face qualifiers in each of the first two rounds, while Djokovic will take on Hubert Hurkacz in his opener. However, Nadal is on a collision course for a potential battle with longtime court rival, Roger Federer, in the semifinals.

Federer, 37, won his only French Open 10 years ago and hasn’t featured in a Roland Garros final since 2011. Nevertheless, he hopes to reverse his recent fortunes on clay and will meet Lorenzo Sonego in his first fixture.

Naomi Osaka has continued her strides since winning her maiden major at the 2018 U.S. Open, since adding the Australian Open to her list of achievements and eyeing a third Grand Slam in Paris.

The world No. 1 has done a tremendous job thus far of dealing with the pressures that come with being viewed as the best in the sport. Still, first-round foe Anna Karolina Schmiedlova will attempt to stage a shock at the opening hurdle while Osaka goes in search of a third straight major win.

Defending women’s champions Simona Halep is seeded third entering the defense of her crown, and Brisbane native Ajla Tomljanovic could offer up an awkward test in round one.

The French Open has produced five different women’s champions over the past five years. Halep could become the first player to defend a Roland Garros title since Justine Henin won three back-to-back between 2005 and 2007 should she retain in 2019.

Djokovic could complete a second career Grand Slam and will hold all four major titles should he win at Roland Garros, but a sea of contenders will rise in an attempt to crush his hopes.
